The East Meadow High School marching band made its Columbus Day Parade debut in 1992, under the direction of Bill Katz, Ken Sepe, Joel Levy and Abby Behr. The band took first place among high school groups that year, and followed that performance with 10 more first-place finishes over the next 20 years. On Oct. 14, the band not only notched its 12th overall victory, but its third in a row. more

Hegarty Elementary School in Island Park is “Together we are better.” In East Meadow, Barnum Woods Elementary School’s motto is “We use our head, heart and hands in all we do.” Last Friday, the two schools backed up those words at a ceremony in the central courtyard of Barnum Woods, where school officials donated $18,500 to the Hegarty School, which was devastated by Hurricane Sandy. more
After several months of fundraising, Barnum Woods Elementary School officials plan to donate $18,500 to the Francis X. Hegarty Elementary School in Island Park, which was devastated by last October’s Hurricane Sandy. The majority of the funds were raised by Barnum Woods students, who amassed more than $13,000 by selling chocolate bars last spring. more
