A Bellmore resident was arrested and charged in a sexual abuse case that allegedly occurred on June 17 in Westbury. According to Nassau County Police, Bellmore resident Memet Arslan, 32, who owns Mediterranean Kebab Restaurant in Westbury, was locking up his restaurant after all the cooks and servers had left. The defendant locked the doors to the restaurant knowing that there was still a 16-year-old girl inside.

At a North Bellmore Civic Association meeting on Monday, the development of the former army base on Maple Avenue in North Bellmore was discussed. The lot, which has been vacant for more than 10 years, is in the process of being excavated and cleaned up, Civic Association President Reinaldo Nunez said.

Kayla Babbush, a sophomore at Kennedy High School in Bellmore, has been working with the Robbie Levine Foundation to bring free CPR/AED training to the Central High School District. The Robbie Levine Foundation was created by Dr. Craig and Jill Levine of Merrick, whose 9-year old son Robbie died suddenly when his heart stopped at a baseball practice in 2005.

The Bellmore Kiwanis and Lions Clubs co-hosted the 22nd annual Nassau County Strawberry Festival this past week. Residents from across Nassau County traveled to the BOCES building on Jerusalem Avenue in North Bellmore to enjoy the festivities, which kicked off last Wednesday.

At age 14, Noah Rubin can honestly say that he has one-upped Roger Federer's record at that age. Noah, who will be a freshman at Kennedy High School in Bellmore in the fall, just finished a stint on the national tennis circuit. He was one of three boys to represent the U.S. in the qualifying round of the World Junior Tennis Competition in Boca Raton, Fla.
