The Halloween spirit abounds as we near that spooky date. There’s much to see and do in the area, before the candy-fest arrives next Saturday. Whether you want to step back in time to celebrate Halloween the way Long Islanders did over 120 years ago, stop by Cradle of Aviation museum for some “haunting” after hours, visit the grounds of Nassau County Museum of Art all dressed up in its Halloween finery, or find some scary thrills at one of the haunted houses in the area, there’s something for Halloween lovers of all ages.

The 23rd annual Bellmore Family Street Festival, organized by the Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores, was originally scheduled for Oct. 17-18, but had to be rescheduled because of the threat of rain. The fair, touted as Nassau County's largest family festival, is now set for this weekend, Oct. 24-25.
With this year's theme, "Sweet Dreams: Filled with Spice and Everything Nice," the festival will take place 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Bellmore Long Island Rail Road station and along Bedford Avenue, with carnival rides every evening.

A 57-year old Rockville Centre resident, identified as “Baby” John Alevis, was among 19 men arrested on Oct. 1 on federal felony charges in connection with what authorities described as a gambling, sports betting and loan sharking ring with ties to organized crime, that operated in New York City and Westchester.
