Members of the Sandel Senior Center’s Service Corps have added to their good deeds around the village — they now staff an intergenerational organization called Homework Helpers, which meets Mondays through Wednesdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the children’s room at the Rockville Centre Public Library. True to its name, the club pairs former school teachers who are members of the center with elementary, middle school and English as a Second Language students who need help with their school work, particularly in reading and math. more
Calhoun High School senior James Panetta raced to 14th place in the New York State Cross-Country Championship in Pawling, N.Y., on Saturday, earning him All-State honors. The Top 20 runners in the race received the accolade. more

American pride was abundant on the day when 1st Lieutenant Cody Hardenburgh of the US Marine Corps visited the Sandel Senior Center. The Senior Men’s Club, most of whom are veterans, invited Lieutenant Hardenbugh to share his experiences as leader of a platoon that served seven months in the Helmand Province in Afghanistan. more
Standing for senior people in action, SPA — a summertime club run by the Sandel Senior Center — hosted its final event on Oct. 15, in the center’s sunny common room. In recognition of the devastating effects of falls on the senior population, the National Council on Aging designated September “National Fall Prevention Month.” And during that month, the Sandel Senior Center, with cooperation from SportSet, was the recent setting for a two-part workshop — attended by over 50 members — designed to prevent or mitigate the consequences of falls, provide education about the reasons for falls and teach practical methods to actually get up off the floor, if a fall takes place. more
Led by Rockville Centre librarian Ellen Berman, who facilitates a book club at the Sandel Senior Center, a number of the center’s members traveled to Molloy College on Oct. 5 to meet David Oliver Relin, who, with Greg Mortensen, wrote the best seller “Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace…One School at a Time.” more
