According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, roughly 7.3 million dogs and cats enter shelters nationwide each year, and 2.7 million of them are euthanized. Fortunately, at places like the Ruff House Rescue in Freeport, there is also an increase in volunteers this season who help ensure that animals find the right homes during the holidays.

To the excitement of hundreds of residents and local animal rights advocates who have been complaining for months that the Town of Hempstead’s Animal Shelter is in dire need of financial monitoring, State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli announced on Oct. 24 that his office will audit the financial operations of the facility. The audit — which DiNapoli said is in response to hundreds of complaints from residents and intends to ensure the shelter’s “integrity of financial accountability — will begin within the next two weeks.

More than 40 local residents joined Hope for Hempstead, a local shelter-reform advocacy group, on June 30 to protest the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter in Wantagh. The group has held several protests of the shelter in the past year, and last week’s rally, held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., followed what the group claims was a “cover up” by the town.

Nearly 100 protesters gathered for a rally that began at 12 p.m. on earlier this month on the front steps of Hempstead’s Town Hall, on Washington Street in Hempstead. The rally was organized by the Hope for Hempstead Shelter, a local shelter-reform advocacy group, to bring awareness to the public of Hempstead Animal Shelter conditions, as well as to Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray’s recent walk-out during a Town Board meeting in April.
