They are known as the Diamondack Terrapin, named for the pattern on their shell, they are the only turtle native to this area and able to survive in the brackish waters of the marsh. Superstorm Sandy will be remembered as one of Nassau County’s most demoralizing calamities: the miles of rubble that choked the expanses where houses had stood in dignified symmetry, the thousands of Long Islanders living in limbo, forced to use their savings to stay afloat. People weren’t the only ones affected by the storm, though. Sandy devastated wildlife throughout Nassau’s Western Bays, which scientists had already considered to be fragile ecosystems –– many on the brink of collapse –– long before the storm. more

The Hofstra University Biology Department has been awarded a grant to clean up a Long Beach salt marsh that students often use to study a marine habitat.

Hofstra awarded grant to clean up salt marsh after Superstorm Sandy

Hofstra University has been awarded a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration grant of $75,000 to remove debris accumulated during Superstorm Sandy from a local salt marsh that is used regularly for research and educational projects. Among the professors spearheading the project is Dr. Russell Burke, of Bellmore. more
