A snowy Saturday evening in E. Meadow

A powerful winter storm continued to barrel through East Meadow Saturday evening, as meteorologists said two to three feet of snow will fall in communities across the northeastern portion of the country this weekend.

According to the National Weather Service, the powerful low pressure system that caused the snowfall will gradually pull away from the East Coast on Sunday. Until then, moderate to heavy snowfall with blizzard conditions will likely continue througout the region.

The National Weather Service reported that, as of 5:30 p.m., 18 inches of snow fell in East Meadow. Between 3 and 7 inches more is expected, and experts noted that most of that additional snow should fall before midnight.

High winds will also blow snow across East Meadow streets. Gusts exceeded 32 miles-per-hour early Saturday night, but are expected to trop to 26 miles-per-hour after midnight.

As of 9 p.m., community members reported that while their streets have been plowed, they need to be cleared again. Town of Hempstead and Nassau County crews will continue to remove all snow from local roadways, officials said.

PSEG Long Island reported that about 857 of its approximately 1.1 million customers across Long Island and the Rockaways were without service at 9 p.m. As of 7:30 p.m., the utility restored service to more than 24,200 customers affected by today's storm — including a handful of East Meadowites who experienced outages.

Electric service crews will continue to work 16-hour shifts through the night to respond to outages as safely and as quickly as possible. To report downed wires or power outages, customers should call PSEG Long Island's Electric Service line at 1-800-490-0075.

The Long Island Expressway and Northern State Parkway are closed, as is the Long Island Rail Road. Gov. Andrew Cuomo said officials are also concerned about coastal flooding in nearby shorefront communities.
