Francis Becker pulled away from his two opponents in the 4th Congressional District Republican primary as results were slowly coming in early Wednesday morning for several elections in Nassau County. There were also several other statewide and local primaries for Nassau voters.

This was the first primary election in Nassau that included the new electronic voting machines.

Unofficial results for many South Shore races, according to the Board of Elections, were still being released as the clock ticked past 1 a.m., with most precincts reported:

With more than 95 percent of the precincts reporting in the 4th Congressional District Republican primary after 1 a.m., Francis Becker was declared the winner, beating Frank Scaturro, 10,361 to 7,733, with Dan Maloney finishing in third with 2,945 votes. The winner faces longtime Democrat incumbent Rep. Carolyn McCarthy.

Patrick Nicolosi defeated Mimi Pierre Johnson in the Democratic primary 2,064 to 1,404 in the 21st Assembly District, which includes parts of Valley Stream, Franklin Square and Elmont. The winner faces Republican Edward Ra, who seeks to replace longtime Assemblyman Thomas Alfano. Ra, who did not have a Republican primary, defeated Patricia Friedman 207-60 in a challenge for the conservative line on the ballot.

More than 95 percent of the precincts reported in the Democratic primary for the 20th Assembly District showed that incumbent Harvey Weisenberg has defeated the former county Legislator Jeff Toback 3,569 to 2,354. The assembly district includes parts of Long Beach, the Five Towns and Oceanside.

Francesca Carlow, who was endorsed by the Democratic party after former county Legislator Dave Mejias dropped out of the race last week after an arrest, still had the formality of a primary. She was victorious, receiving 5,421 votes to 2,250. Though Mejias announced his decision to abandon his campaign, his name remained on the ballot. Carlow, of Plainview seeks to run as the Democratic challenger against longtime state Sen. Kemp Hannon in the 6th Senate District, which includes parts of East Meadow, Salisbury, Levittown, Lakeview, Garden City and more.
