A “Daddy” of an Independence Day Salute at Point Lookout
The joint will be jumpin’ when Big Bad Voodoo Daddy brings their swinging Big Band era sound to the beach at Point Lookout for the Town of Hempstead’s annual Salute to Veterans Independence Day festivities, also on Saturday, June 28, at Town Park Point Lookout.
A patriotic recognition of several heroic war veterans starts things off at 7:30 p.m., followed by the concert and concluding with a rousing fireworks show by Bay Fireworks, at approximately 9:30 p.m.
A dynamic force on the music scene, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy brings classic shake and shimmy to Big Band revival music. The nine-piece band is best known for the hits “Go-Daddy-O,” “Mr. Pinstripe Suit” and “I Wanna Be Like You.” The ensemble, which is committed to the music and swing era lifestyle, is not only renowned for their impeccable performances, but also their classic suit and fedora styling and gentlemanly demeanor.
Concertgoers can also view vintage automobiles on display from several area car clubs as part of the patriotic celebration. Besides seating and blankets, everyone is encouraged to bring a picnic dinner and settle in for an enjoyable celebration of the nation’s 238th birthday. Food will also be available for purchase.
Town Park Point Lookout is at 1300 Lido Blvd. in Point Lookout. For information, contact (516) 292-9000 ext. 7382 or www.toh.li.

Fireworks at Valley Stream’s Firemen’s Field
The holiday fun continues next Friday, July 4, when Valley Stream Chamber of Commerce and the Incorporated Village of Valley Stream hosts its annual Fourth of July Fireworks Show.
Watching the fireworks display at Firemen’s Field in Valley Stream remains a summer ritual for many south shore residents. This event remains one of the largest fireworks displays in the area, according to Valley Stream Chamber of Commerce officials, with over 25,000 people who attend yearly. Visitors will be treated to a glorious display of pyrotechnics, and entertainment, along with children’s activities.
Uppercut also shares in Valley Stream’s festivities, starting at 7:30 p.m., and continuing until the fireworks begin. There will also be food and drinks for sale.
It’s a neighborhood tradition for many to watch the fireworks outside the gates of Firemen’s Field. However, village officials prefer that people actually enter the park to get the most out of the event. Tickets, which sell out quickly, are $7 in advance and $10 at the gate. They are available at the Hendrickson Pool Facility, the Valley Stream Community Center in Hendrickson Park, Village Hall, and the Henry Waldinger Memorial Library. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. Enter at Emerson Place or Albermarle Avenue entrances to Firemen’s Field.
