City officials say emails were ‘doctored’

New claims emerged in an amended lawsuit that was filed against the city last week — which also named the Long Beach Democratic Committee and member Steve Kohut — that emails illustrate political retaliation initiated by the Democrats.

The new complaint references three emails, including two from then-Council President Fran Adelson, sent to Democratic council members Scott Mandel, Len Torres, former Councilman Mike Fagen, and Schnirman. It claims that in one email, dated Jan. 2, 2012, and referring to Radin’s application for the police commissioner’s job, Adelson told Fagen, Mandel, Schnirman and Torres that Radin would “... be doing traffic guard at the school.”

In another email, reacting to McCormack’s effort to be considered for police commissioner, Adelson allegedly wrote, “Is he a moron? We should be firing him not hiring him.”

City officials, however, insist that Adelson’s emails were changed, and that copies that the city claims are the originals, and which were provided to the Herald, make that clear.

In one email, referencing Radin, Adelson wrote only, “Didn’t realize these resumes came in for the Police Commissioner on the lbnycm e-mail. Fran.”

In another, referring to McCormack, Adelson offered no comment, and simply forwarded McCormack’s resume and cover letter to Torres, Mandel, Fagen and Schnirman.

Another email referenced in the suit was sent in December 2011 from Kohut to the four Democratic council members, Schnirman, former Councilman Scott Nigro and Long Beach Democratic Committee Chairman Michael Zapson. It was titled “FYI Police Department.”

According to the suit, two weeks before the Democrats took control of City Hall, Kohut informed his fellow Democrats that the coalition administration was going to promote two sergeants to lieutenant, a move that would prevent Chernaski from being promoted to detective lieutenant. The suit claims that Kohut told the soon-to-be majority members, “The first thing we do when we get in is demote, re-assign and punish these guys.”
