Firefighters stretched two hose lines into the front door of the home and searched for any trapped victims.

“Flames were blowing out of every window,” Cuevas said, adding that it took firefighters about an hour to bring the blaze under control. “It was a fire fight. Visibility was zero. We had a floor to ceiling fire in every room. But our guys did an amazing job in knocking the fire down. No other houses were damaged at all.”

Cuevas said that three Long Beach firefighters and one Point Lookout firefighter sustained minor burns. One firefighter also suffered back and neck injuries after an air conditioning unit fell on his head. The firefighter was transferred to a local hospital and later released.

Cuevas said that the fire was electrical and not suspicious.

“Because this actually happened in the Town of Hempstead, the town’s building department was notified and they came down and secured the premises,” Cuevas said, adding that firefighters were on the scene for more than three hours.

“The fire on East Bay Drive was pretty bad, but this was much worse,” Cuevas said, referring to a fire that destroyed a “cluttered” home last month. “This is one of those big houses and it was just destroyed.”
