In the groove with the Swingtime Big Band

Acclaimed 20-piece band livens up the Madison Theatre on Sunday

In Concert

Swingtime Big Band

Those vibrant sounds of the swing era will be heard at the Madison Theatre, when the Swingtime Big Band vividly recreates the style and essence of those great big band days. With saxophonist and artistic director Steve Shaiman at the helm, the band continues to thrill audiences with authentic interpretations of the timeless music of such great band leaders as Count Basie, Artie Shaw, Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington, and Harry James, among others. Swingtime’s female vocalist Bobbie Ruth recreates the “gal vocal” stylings of such legendary singers as Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald, Eydie Gormé, Billie Holiday, and Judy Garland. The band’s male vocalist, Jerry Costanzo, brings to life the sound of big band crooners such as Nat “King” Cole, Bobby Darin, Dean Martin, and, of course, the immortal Frank Sinatra.

Sunday, Feb. 16, 3 p.m. $30. Madison Theatre, Molloy College, 1000 Hempstead Ave., Rockville Centre. (516) 323-4444 or

Harlem Globetrotters

Basketball’s dynamic funnymen are back! The Harlem Globetrotters will bring their 2014 World Tour to Nassau Coliseum with a display of some amazing feats of ball handling as only the Globetrotters can do. This year’s team is led by Bull Bullard, whose “dunk gone wrong” in Honduras this past November, made headlines. His dislocated shoulder and gash to the head have healed and he is expected to be back to his normal self once again — hanging up-side-down on the hoop, standing on the rim to kick away a shot and doing back-flips down the court.

Sunday, Feb. 15, 2 and 7 p.m. Tickets range from $17 to $110, plus a limited number of courtside and VIP seats. Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale. (800) 745-3000 or or
