LIRR suspends service after third rail problem

Posted

The Metropolitan Transit Authority has announced suspended Long Island Rail Road service and some train delays for the evening rush hour, resulting from a third rail problem in one of the East River tunnels.

According to the MTA website, westbound LIRR service has been suspended from Jamaica Station to Penn Station, along with the Port Washington Branch from Woodside to Penn Station.

This suspended service comes after the loss of third rail power caused the 12:09 p.m. train from Babylon to become stuck in the tunnel under the East River.

A locomotive has since reached the stuck train and will move it to Penn Station.
