For Rainis, the classrooms that would be added wouldn’t be considered extra, but necessary. And although enrollment has remained relatively constant, there is now more of a need for specialized classrooms, he said. “As specialties have come along,” Rainis said, “an increasing number of classrooms have been dedicated for various purposes, which takes the number of general education classrooms and continues to reduce it.”

Burak said that classrooms and offices have been reconfigured over the years to accommodate the growing number of specialties. “We want to make sure that our vision and our facilities are in alignment,” she said, “so that we can provide the kids with what they need.”

The board will continue to discuss the proposal in the coming months, but there is still much work to be done before anything is put up for a public vote, Lynch said.
