Penny Frondelli/Herald
Runners from Team Sapphire Princess of Freeport were all pumped up at the Gubelli 5k in Island Park.

Summer arrived in Island Park on June 28 with a 5K run-walk to benefit the Jimi Gubelli Foundation at Masone Beach. The 6th annual run helped to fund over $10,000 in scholarships presented to Island Park students heading off to college.

John Walsh finished the 5K in 18:39. The winner on the female side was Kiera Donovan, who finished in 21:42.

Jimi Gubelli, a volunteer for many charity organizations in Island Park, died suddenly on December 19, 2008.The Jimi Gubelli Foundation was created to honor and preserve his legacy of selflessness and charity, and all donations will provide scholarships for future young adults who exemplify that legacy.

The scholarship recipients for 2014 were Stephanie Ruscio, Robert Reichel, Daniel Sarnelli, Alexis Konstantakis and Thomas Berotti.

Island Park fire chief Anthony De’Esposito is a co-founder of the foundation.
