Indeed, Amato said she believes the law could set a precedent throughout the state for communities that are affected by local facilities such as hospitals. “If this is written correctly, every area and community in New York is going to want to copy it,” she said. “This law will be mimicked all over the state … I’m sure of it.”

If the town passes such a law, Hudes noted, the task of checking the parking permits will fall to the Nassau County Police Department. “Now it will be up to [police] to do the enforcement,” he said.

Hudes applauded residents for their efforts. “This is the ultimate grass-roots community effort,” he said. “They have brought their needs and ideas to town government and state government … to improve their quality of life.”

“That’s the most important piece of the whole thing,” Amato added. “This was unique, it’s special, and we’re fortunate to have [the state law] passed.”
