Laikin said that all of the submissions were good, but the judges especially liked Villanueva’s. The winning videos will be used during future county anti-drug assemblies or events, Laikin said, and may run on television.

Villanueva said she was a little surprised when she found out she took second place because she knew her classmates’ videos were good and figured the rest of the county would have strong showings as well.

Friends of Bridge, a Valley Stream-based agency which offers group and individual treatment and coping strategies to people who are dealing with addiction to alcohol and drugs, also took notice of Villanueva’s video. Kathy Bogle, who is on the organization’s Board of Directors, said Friends of Bridge is planning on inviting her to its annual brunch in April where they will show her PSA.

“What’s great about this is these are young people and that’s the audience you try to reach,” Bogle said. “The video she made is attractive to young people and it’s very well done. It’s a strong message.”
