Teen dies on the tracks at Bellmore station

A 19-year-old was killed by an westbound train Monday afternoon at the Bellmore Long Island Rail Road station, MTA Police said.

The victim has been identified as Wantagh resident Benjamin Sassoon, MTA spokesman Aaron Donovan said.

At 4:45 p.m., Sassoon jumped onto the tracks in front of an oncoming non-passenger train, Donovan said. Police located the body within 10 minutes of the accident and declared Sassoon dead at the scene.

“Further details of the incident are still under investigation,” Donovan said, adding that the possibility of a suicide is being considered.

Westbound service on the Babylon line was temporarily suspended. As of 9 p.m. on Monday, service had been fully restored in both directions.
