LIRR service restored after blizzard

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority said that service on the Long Island Rail Road was restored system-wide three days after a weekend blizzard battered Baldwin and the region.

But while the MTA's website showed that service was returned on all branches, a residual delay remained on the Babylon branch due to aftereffects of the snowstorm. And a service change due to the storm was being made on the West Hempstead line.

The National Weather Service warned that areas of black ice could appear on roadways on Tuesday after melting snow refreezes. The service predicted a slight chance of showers after 3 p.m., with increasing clouds and a high near 45 for Baldwin. A southwest wind is between 10 and 14 mph, and the chance of precipitation is 20 percent.

For Tuesday night, the weather service said there would be a chance of rain showers before 5 a.m., then a slight chance of rain and snow showers. Mostly cloudy skies were predicted for the overnight, with a low around 32, and a southwest wind at 9 to 11 mph. The chance of precipitation is 30 percent.

The weather service said, "The chance of showers will continue into tonight, mainly across Long Island and Connecticut, as cold front moves through. High pressure will then return to the region for the middle of the week with tempertures near to a few degrees above normal."

Wednesday is expected to be mostly sunny, with a high near 41. Wind chill values are to be between 25 and 35, and a west wind at 9 to 13 mph.

The weather service said 28 inches of snow fell on Baldwin during the storm.

Elsewhere, Amtrak said it will continue a modified schedule in the mid-Atlantic region, with most services operating between 80 and 100 percent of normal levels, following the winter storm. "As soon as possible this Tuesday, Amtrak will determine plans for Wednesday, Jan. 27, for the Northeast Corridor (Boston-New York-Washington) and for additional service restoration south and west of Washington/Virginia," the train service said on its website.
