Time to open the piggy bank

Posted

To the Editor:

Seems to me, and probably many others, that the East Meadow Board of Education got caught with its pants down as it was shown to have not only the highest reserve fund of all the school districts on Long Island, but far exceeded the next one on the list.

The board now wants to put a positive spin on it, calling it “careful planning” by our officials. Well, it’s time to open the piggy bank and use some of these funds to create a better school district and a reason for families to move here.

We should begin by having an all-day kindergarten program, something most other districts already have. If there is room enough for these half-day students to become full-day students for first grade, then there should be room enough for the full day kindergarten, and certainly the funds to hire the teachers and staff.
