Superintendent of Schools Dr. James Hunderfund and Rose Linda Ricca, assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction and educational services, made a surprise visit to Ms. Waverla’s classroom on April 23 to announce the news.

Christine Waverla, a math teacher at Howard T. Herber Middle School in Malverne, was named the 2014 Elementary Teacher of the Year by the Nassau County Mathematics Teachers Association. She will be honored by the NCMTA at a special ceremony on May 21.

Waverla was selected for this honor based on her knowledge of the subject matter, her skill to work effectively with students at every level, her ability to infuse her curriculum with new developments in mathematics education, her willingness to share her strengths with other math teachers, and her participation in professional organizations.
