Lynbrook school leadership club hosts 10th annual holiday dinner

Students in Lynbrook High School’s Leadership/Key Club brought some holiday cheer to a group of local senior citizens in December as they hosted the 10th annual Senior Citizen Holiday Dinner at Greis Park Recreation Center.

About 25 student volunteers served senior citizens full meals that included appetizers, salad and an array of entrées and desserts. The Lynbrook High School brass ensemble, directed by Brian White, performed a selection of holiday favorites throughout the evening.

The dinner was a result of two months of fundraising and planning by the students. Club members Lindsey Zaransky and Shari Nearnberg led the team of volunteers as project managers.

“It’s great to actually be the ones catering to them, because it’s usually the adults who are catering to us,” Nearnberg said.

“It really is a team effort,” said Melissa Marr, who advises the Leadership/Key Club with Allison Goodman. “It’s a great way to give back to the community.”

Josephine York, a member of the Lynbrook Senior Citizens Club, looks forward to being served by the students. “They are so charming and so delightful,” she said. “They are always smiling and cheerful.”

Community businesses, organizations and individuals donated the food and beverages for the event.

High school secretary Patti Rosalbo baked and packaged homemade oatmeal raisin cookies for the seniors to take home as parting gifts. Teacher Lauren Regnato and students in her food and nutrition classes prepared four trays of food and two pumpkin pies. High school students and Leadership/Key Club members Maggie Rouder and Casey Frankel also contributed homemade food for the event. Rouder made four trays of chicken parmigiana and Frankel baked cupcakes and cookies.
