A shamrock grows in Brooklyn

Brooklyn was a good fit for Irish immigrants to America, home ownership being one of the benefits which Irish immigrants could afford in the Borough of Churches. Irish home ownership in Brooklyn will be the topic at the March 9 meeting of the Irish Cultural Society at the Garden City Library, 60 Seventh Street, across the street from the Garden City Hotel. The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

The speaker at the meeting will be Dr. Stephen Sullivan, who titled his talk, “A Shamrock Grows in Brooklyn.” His presentation will detail the opportunities for property acquisition by those of moderate means in Brooklyn. Sullivan will connect immigrant property ownership with improved economic opportunities for the next generation of American-born Irish.

President Clare Curtin recommends attendance at the Easter Monday Memorial Service to remember the Easter Rising in Dublin 100 years ago.

The Easter Monday Monument is located behind the courts in Mineola. The ceremony is brief and dignified and a reminder of the sacrifices made in the cause of Ireland’s independence.
