An Easter egg-stravaganza at Seaman’s Neck Park

Posted

It took less than 10 minutes for children to scoop up 2,500 plastic eggs that lined the playground and tennis courts at Seaman’s Neck Park in Seaford last Saturday morning.

The Seaford Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual Easter egg hunt, and Chamber officials breathed a sigh of relief that the rain stopped overnight and the sun was shining bright. Volunteers filled eggs with Hershey kisses and placed them all around the park that morning.

“I think it was a great day,” Chamber President Mary Lucere said, noting that the event took about three weeks to plan, and was over in a matter of minutes.

For any child who couldn’t have chocolate, the Chamber provided other candy as an alternative. Every child was also able to take home one toy, and they could choose from hula hoops, puzzles, jump ropes, toy airplanes, bubbles, dolls and glow sticks. Few toys among the 400 purchased were left by the end of the morning.

The Easter Bunny and Spiderman also made appearances, and were available for photo opportunities. Lauren Barbosa, who brought her 3-year-old son to the egg hunt, said that was a nice touch.

She commended the Chamber for running a well-organized event for local children. “It’s nice that it’s at a park,” she said, “so afterward they can play.”

In fact, many did stay, as the playground was still bustling well after all the eggs were claimed. “You can make it a little morning event with the family,” said Vanessa Krussman, whose two boys, ages 4 and 2, came to the egg hunt for the first time. “I liked it very much. It’s nice and close, so it was perfect.”

Krussman said her older son found a lot of eggs, and was happy to share with his brother.

Jonathan Wright, 8, of Seaford, found about 10 eggs, mostly around the bases of trees. He said the search was easy. “It’s a light-colored egg on a dark-colored surface,” he said.

Numerous businesses sponsored the event, which helped to pay for toys and candy. “We raise just enough money to cover the expenses,” Lucere said. She added that her favorite part of the day was seeing the smile on the children’s faces.
