Bedford Avenue bakery hosts a very sweet contest in Bellmore

Nothing says summer like a good, old-fashioned eating contest, and for the second straight year, the Got Cupcakes? Bakery, on Bedford Avenue in Bellmore Village, hosted a cupcake-eating contest on July 8.

The competition attracted contestants and viewers from across Long Island. The contest was divided into age groups. The first group was for contestants up to the 12 years old; contestants in the junior division had to eat one large signature cupcake without using their hands. Eight-year old Zach Downing, from Virginia, was up visiting relatives and won the competition.

Older contestants were able to use their hands but had to dig into a few more cupcakes. Teens downed six cupcakes, while adults feasted on a dozen. Merrick’s Jonathan Degorter ate a dozen cupcakes in under four minutes to win the title.
