Bellmores honor America’s fallen heroes

Posted

Bellmore and North Bellmore residents showed support for local veterans by participating in the annual parade and commemorative ceremonies on Memorial Day.

North Bellmore American Legion Post 1749, which celebrated its 66th year as a group, sponsored the parade with American Legion Post 948 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2770. All three organizations invited community members to remember those who have “given the ultimate sacrifice.”

Ceremonies began on May 27 at Newbridge Road Elementary School, where speakers from veterans’ organizations and local legislators offered solemn words. The parade then headed south on Bellmore Avenue, west on Oak Street and south on Bedford Avenue before ending at the veterans and firefighter memorials.

The parade grand marshal was John Ambrose, a World War II Army medical corpsman and member of American Legion Post 1749.
