Black History Month inspires students' artwork

Posted

Stella Crawford’s fourth-grade class at Malverne’s Davison Avenue Intermediate School read a selection from their English/Language Arts text book titled “Me & Uncle Romie,” by Claire Hartfield. This selection about Harlem Renaissance artist Romare Bearden piqued the interest of students about the type of artwork Bearden created and his life in Harlem. Bearden used multicultural images to create richly textured collages. Inspired, the students decided to celebrate Black History Month by using their own culture and interests to create collages reminiscent of his work. Select pieces of work will be on display at the Lakeview Public Library throughout the month.
