The Malverne Village Board of Trustees unanimously adopted its proposed 2011-12 budget last week.

The April 21 adoption was quick as three of the four trustees and Malverne Mayor Patricia McDonald approved a $14,359,409 spending plan. Deputy Mayor James Callahan was not part of the budget adoption, having been hospitalized the previous week after suffering a stroke.

“During the budget process, the village board was faced with many challenges,” McDonald said just prior to the adoption vote, “but of utmost importance was to provide the lowest possible tax increase.”

To this end, she added, village spending had been reduced by more than $121,000 from the 2010-11 budget. Despite the reduction, there will be a tax increase of about 2.8 percent — average taxpayers will pay between $80 and $100 in extra taxes next year.

The 2011-12 budget will take effect June 1.
