Calhoun hosts a St. Baldrick's spectacular

High School raises $50K for childhood cancer research

Calhoun High School recently held its fifth annual St. Baldrick’s fundraiser. The event benefits the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, which raises money for childhood cancer research.

With online donations, cash and checks collected at the door, and raffle money, the donations totalled more than $50,000. Calhoun has now raised $250,000 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation in the past five years.

More than 150 heads were shaved, and 55 girls donated their hair, making it the largest turnout in the event’s short history. Barbers and stylists from Solon Luna, Bangz, Lemon Tree and other shops volunteered to cut all that hair. Participants collected pledges for having their heads shaved.

The nonprofit Locks for Love will use the hair to create hairpieces for individuals who lose their hair during cancer treatments.
