Candles all a-glow

Community celebrates the annual lighting of the Hanukkah menorah

The night was cool, but hearts were warm as the South Baldwin Jewish Center celebrated Hanukkah by lighting the community menorah on Dec. 8 at the Long Island Rail Road station.

The community menorah — the nine-pronged candelabrum — was actually lighted on the third night of the holiday. Each candle represents a day of the holiday, with an extra candle, called a shamash or servant candle, used to light the others.

After the lights were fired up, revelers returned to the Jewish Center for a holiday party that featured hot dogs, soup, and traditional latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts).

Hanukkah commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean revolt against the ancient Greeks.
