Car slams into Jim-Jam Cleaners

Posted

A red Honda sedan smashed through the front doors of North Merrick’s Jim-Jam Cleaners on Oct. 25, wrecking a section of the building’s façade and injuring a person inside, a fire department official said.

James Rogers, the North Merrick Fire Department first assistant chief, said the person’s injury was “minor,” and he or she refused medical assistance from first-responders. The car’s driver, a woman, was uninjured, Rogers said.

“The driver thought that — I don’t know what she thought,” Rogers said. “She was in the parking lot, and next thing she knew her car was through the window.”

He said the driver showed no signs of intoxication.

At 3:30 p.m., 30 North Merrick Fire Department members rushed to Jim-Jam, at 1200 Merrick Ave., in a fire engine, heavy rescue truck, ambulance and two chief cars, according to Rogers. Fire officials called the Town of Hempstead’s Building Department, which later determined that the dry-cleaning facility was structurally sound, Rogers said.

Jim-Jam is open for business.
