Carey volleys past Sewanhaka

Carey continued its winning ways on the volleyball court as the Lady Seahawks swept Sewanhaka 25-15, 25-17, 25-18 in a Conference A-III matchup on Oct. 10. With the win, Carey improved to 8-2 in conference play.

Junior Megan Mannle had 10 kills and three blocks to lead Carey. Senior captain Alissa Schurr had three aces, five kills, 12 assists and three digs as the Lady Seahawks kept their playoff hopes alive.

Head coach Kim Poveromo is pleased with her team’s performance in 2012. “The girls have been just terrific,” Poveromo said. “We’ve improved considerably over the past few seasons, and have really grown as a team. The seniors want the playoffs so badly. They have so much heart, and the camaraderie is outstanding.”

The match featured the Carey girls clad in pink jerseys in a show of support of the fight against breast cancer. Carey’s Think Pink Club, which is headed up by Poveromo, raises awareness and support for the cause through community service. The club raises funds to assist community members who are suffering with cancer.

Carey closed out the first sat with kills by Schurr and Mannle, and carried momentum into the second. Mannle was dominant at the net registering six kills, and senior Guistina Roselli had five service points during the middle game.

The final set was more of the same. Each time Sewanhaka seemed to get something going, Mannle, Schurr, senior captain Shannon O’Connell, and senior Ashley Turato would come up big for the Lady Seahawks.

Sewanhaka, which received solid efforts from senior Danielle Georges, junior Renee Daley, and sophomore Jillian Filippi, fell to 2-7. Georges had eight kills in the match.

Head coach Erica Brennan believes the Lady Indians can play better. “We’re lacking consistency and haven’t found what it takes to finish,” she said. “The girls play very hard, but they don’t have the confidence in themselves or their teammates when they get down in matches. They’ve shown they can play better.”

With only one team from the conference earning a playoff berth, the Lady Seahawks, who are third in the conference behind undefeated Great Neck South and Division, will have their work cut out for them.

Poveromo, who is assisted by her sister, Katie Hoffman, believes her girls can compete for the top spot. “If we don’t beat ourselves and play our game, we’re capable of playing with Great Neck South and Division,” Poveromo said. “They’re tough teams that moved down a conference, so they’re used to playing at a high level. We just have to take care of what we can control.”

The Lady Seahawks travel to Division on Monday, Oct. 22, while the Lady Indians travel to Jericho. Both matches begin at 4:30 p.m.
