Cooling Centers open in Town of Hempstead to beat the heat these next few days

Cooling Centers are now open in the Town of Hempstead for residents to beat the heat during a National Weather Service heat advisory set from noon today to 8 p.m. on Thursday as temperatures climb to the mid-nineties. Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin along with Councilwoman Melissa "Missy" Miller and ToH Receiver Jeanine C. Driscoll announced the opening of the Town of Hempstead Cooling Centers yesterday, which will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Locations below.

In addition, hours have been extended at Hempstead beaches and pools so visitors can beat the heat there as well. Beaches will be open and staffed with lifeguards until 7 p.m. and pools open and staffed with lifeguards until 8 p.m. The extended hours will last until this Friday.

The enactment of a heat advisory means that the combination of heat and humidity will make temperatures feel higher, such as 95 to 100 degrees or above and the heat will last for two or more days consecutively. The heat can be especially harmful to seniors, those with chronic health problems, or mental health conditions. During this time, it’s important to check in on vulnerable friends, family, and neighbors- it could save their life.
