Students dressed in red, white and blue for the ceremony, which was led by Principal Mary Natoli. Natoli told students to always remember the importance of the American flag, which is a symbol of the country’s democracy and freedom. Elmont American Legion Post #1033 First Vice Commander Eric Spinner was on hand to explain the history of Flag Day; prior to veterans Bill DePietro and George Dee raising the flag to a drum roll by sixth-grade band members. Also taking part in the tribute were Student Council President Emily Locker, Vice President Chelsea Medina and Historian Joshua Szala, who poignantly read “A Flag Day Poem” by Winifred C. Marshall.
