Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera is given a new production by the Gilbert & Sullivan Light Opera Company of Long Island this weekend. The show features a cast of 30 performers and the critically acclaimed 18-piece Gilbert & Sullivan Light Opera Orchestra. The operetta, which enjoyed a successful run on Broadway in the 1980s, tells the story of Frederic, who at a young age was mistakenly apprenticed to a band of pirates. The play begins on Frederic’s 21st birthday, when he is freed of his servitude. What follows is one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most delightful stories, with swashbuckling romance and many laughts. The score includes such Gilbert and Sullivan favorites as “I am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General,” “Poor Wandering One,” and the rousing “With Cat-Like Tread.”
