Rockville Centre’s deputy mayor, Chuck Joyce, was hospitalized Sunday night after being hit by a car on Long Beach Road.

Joyce, a paramedic with the village Fire Department, was directing traffic after EMTs responded to a call at Three Brothers Pizzeria, at 212 N. Long Beach Road, when a slow-moving SUV struck him from behind, village spokesman Jeff Kluewer said.

Joyce was taken to South Nassau Communities Hospital, where he was kept overnight for testing and observation and was said to be in stable condition. According to Kluewer, Joyce was resting comfortably on Monday. On Tuesday, Kluewer said that Joyce was still hospitalized.

At press time, no charges had been filed against the driver, and the incident is being considered an accident. "It was chalked up to the confusion of the scene," Kluewer said.
