Dinner in the Dark set for this weekend

The Rockville Centre Lion’s Club proudly continues it’s tradition of Dinner in the Dark. This year marks its 5th anniversary.

The event will be at the Rockville Centre Links on Saturday, May 21. The fundraiser gives guests a rare opportunity to experience the challenges of the visually impaired. This is accomplished through the use of blindfolds provided at each place setting during dinner. Lions have always considered themselves “Knights of the  blind” since they accepted the challenge from Hellen Keller in 1925.

This year, the dinner will be raising money to help support the construction of the Lions/Challenger playground at Hickey Field. It will be a playground for children who face physical challenges. This is a joint venture with the RVC Little League. The Rockville Centre Guild for the Arts will also receive a portion of the dinner proceeds. The Guild  awards scholarships to students and is the umbrella organization for the South Shore Symphony Orchestra.

The honorees at this year’s dinner are two accomplished Rockville Centre Residents and Lions members: Michelle Sewell and Wayne Lipton. Both are committed to public service.

Sewell is an instructor at Molloy College and Hofstra University and is currently pursuing her doctorate in finance at Pace University.  She is a director of the Rockville Centre Education Foundation, involved in the PTA and numerous other community activities.

Lipton founded Concierge Choice Physicians in 2005. It currently operates in 23 states and is the second-largest physician management company of its kind in the nation. Lipton is president of the Rockville Centre Guild for the Arts. He has performed for more than 22 years at the annual fireworks concert and has been the producer of the Nutcracker Ballet for more than 20 years.
