Don't miss Merrick's Declaration of Independence reading

The Historical Society of the Merricks will hold its annual reading of the Declaration of Independence on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Merrick Gazebo, on Merrick Avenue, just north of the LIRR tracks.

Everyone is encouraged to take part in this time-honored event, that has been an ongoing ceremony instituted by the historical society more than 25 years ago.

Participants will have the chance to actually read a single line from the declaration; a free copy of the declaration, as well as the Constitution of the United States will be given to all in attendance.

Larry Garfinkel, the historical society’s president, will, as always, offer his unique historical perspective and documentation to help participants recall the readings that tok place all over the land when the declaration was first shared with the population.

All are encouraged to come out; the historical society noted that the one-hour tradition still leaves the rest of the 4th of July for families to attend to their own traditional celebrations.
