Drill they must: The Rockville Centre FD holds exercise

Drill closes Fireman's Field during evening concert at SSHS

South Side High School spring concertgoers had to find alternate parking or make other transportation arrangements on the evening of June 3, when the Rockville Centre Fire Department scheduled a propane burn off drill at Fireman’s Field, adjacent to the school.

Saying that he could not guarantee the safety of cars parked in the field during the drill, Fire Chief Mark Murray closed it to vehicles other than official trucks and firefighters’ personal use cars, SUVs and pickup trucks.

The school district, which had been informed of the impending drill, used its ConnectEd reverse dialing system on June 2 to notify high school families of the field closure. Announcements were also made in the auditorium prior to the field being closed, because some concertgoers had already parked in the field without knowing it was supposed to be off limits during the exercise. Many left hurriedly to move their cars.

The Fire Department said it has scheduled an additional drill on June 10 — an evening when many guests are expected to attend Senior Awards Night — that will necessitate limited parking or the complete closure of Fireman’s Field.
