East Meadow Girl Scout elected as National Council delegate

Girl Scouts are known for their inspiring drive to make the world around them a better place. One East Meadow scout has truly proven herself to be just that, stepping up to a leadership role where she will continue to support, empower and inspire future generations of girl scouts.

Carlie Mendoza, Bronze, Silver and Gold Award winner, was elected as a National Council Delegate on May 25, 2011. Mendoza joins other board members who work toward a mission to ‘provide leadership, innovation and constant support to the Girl Scouts of Nassau County Council.’

“I am very honored and privileged to be nominated and chosen as a representative of the Girl Scouts in Nassau County,” said Mendoza.

Mendoza has been a Girl Scout for 12 years and is currently an Ambassador Girl Scout, which is considered the highest level that can be reached in the organization. She is a member of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County Media Girls, Chorus, Asian Task Force, Girls Leading Girls and the Bishop’s Troop of Rockville Centre. In May, she received an award called ”Spirit Alive” which is the highest Girl Scout national religious award. In addition, Mendoza attended the National Council Session/51st Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana as a part of the Girl Scout Leadership Institute.

Mendoza will also attend this year’s National Convention where she hopes to have as much fun and meet as many new people as she did before. “As one of the National Delegates, I will be attending the 2011 National Council Session/52nd Convention which will take place in Houston, Texas this upcoming November, and vote on measures as a representative of our council. I hope that I will serve justly as the voice of the girls,” stated Mendoza.

Through Girl Scouting, Mendoza believes that she has learned “leadership, patience, maturity, determination and many other skills.” Her involvement with the GSNC Media Girls has given her some particularly amazing opportunities. “As a member of the GSNC Media Girls, I have met many dignitaries, learned how to network and compose myself in front of adults and have been interviewed on the radio, newspapers and television,” shared Mendoza.

The fondest moment Mendoza has had with the Girl Scouts was with the GSNC Chorus. “On February 5, 2006, better known as Super Bowl Sunday, Dove introduced a new commercial that featured the Girl Scouts of Nassau County Chorus as the voices behind the images where we performed the background song “True Colors,” made popular by performer Cyndi Lauper,” she reflected. “This was my most memorable experience and this once in a lifetime opportunity will never be forgotten.”
