Finishing with a 102.96 weighted average, Erin Katherine Eschbach has claimed the spot of valedictorian for East Rockaway High School’s graduating Class of 2010.
When asked how does it feel to be named valedictorian, she said, “I feel proud because I’ve always worked hard in school so it’s nice to be recognized.”
The News 12 Scholar Athlete winner has been actively involved throughout her years at East Rockaway High School. She has participated in National Honor Society, It’s Academic, Yearbook Committee, Saint Raymond’s Church Folk Group, played flute and piccolo in the pits of the district’s musicals, played keyboard bass for the jazz band, been Rock Rivalry’s financial chairperson and 2010’s treasurer for four years, and has served as treasurer for Tri-M Music Honor Society. Another big accomplishment for Erin has been making Class C All County for the Varsity cross country team.
“I learned how great it is to come from a small school because you can get the best experiences out of it,” Erin said. “You get to meet everybody and have close relationships with your teachers.”
“Erin has made her mark on East Rockaway High School through her stellar scholarship, service, musical talent and athletic prowess,” said her guidance counselor, Donna Katzman. “Erin has lent her talent to our district musicals by playing the flute and piccolo in the pit orchestra, St. Raymond’s musicals and folk group and to our own concert band. She has served her class as treasurer for four years and this year, she brought great pride to the East Rockaway community when selected by News 12 as a Scholar Athlete. Particularly, what we most treasure about Erin Eschbach is her devotion to our school community and her willingness to help others. Outstanding character and commitment to every pursuit is Erin’s trademark; these traits will serve her well as she pursues a medical career at the elite Sophie Davis School of Medical Science at City College.”
