The countdown to Hurricane Irene’s arrival is on, as several residents have packed their bags or gathered supplies to brave the storm. Several people are sounding off on Facebook about their plans.

Kristina Caracciolo, of East Rockaway, said she was biting the bullet, and evacuating. “I’m packing up the laptop,” she said.“…Irene, be gentle.”

Colleen Lonergan-Greene, also an East Rockaway resident, said that the village’s auxiliary police had drove down her block to tell residents to evacuate. “I’m preparing for the worst, and hoping for the best,” she said.

In Lynbrook, Shannon Straub is ready for Irene. “Well we have water, lots of snacks, new board games and charged all electronics,” she said, “…and I think we're ready. Bring it on Irene.”

East Rockaway native Maureen Choate offered advice to residents. To all my Family, Friends, & Students...Please be safe & sound on Sunday,” she said. “Be smart, prepare for the worst and expect the best!! What a wild week of weather.”

In Lynbrook, Hendrick anticipates that the biggest problem might be old trees falling down due to heavy winds. The village will keep an eye on any problematic areas, he said.
