Eight from South Side High School sign National Letters of Intent

Eight student-athletes from South Side High School signed Letters of Intent with colleges and universities this fall.

By signing a National Letter of Intent, a prospective student-athlete agrees to attend the designated instituion for at least one year. In turn, the school agrees to provide an athletics scholarship for that year to the student-athlete, provided he or she is admitted and eligible for financial aid. An important provision of the program is that after a student signs a letter, other participating institutions can no longer recruit that student.

Started in 1964 with seven conferences and eight independent institutions, the voluntary program, managed by the NCAA Eligibility Center, now includes 616 Division 1 and Division II schools. By emphasizing a commitment to an educational institution, not particular coaches or teams, the National Letter of Intent program enables the student to focus on his or her educational objectives.
