This year's election victories went to local incumbent Republicans Fran Becker and Vincent Muscarella in the 6th and 8th county Legislative Districts, respectively.

With almost all election districts reporting late Tuesday night, Becker had nearly 70 percent of the vote against Democratic challenger Anthony Gonzalez. While Muscarella received 8,383 votes to Democractic challenger Scott Milano's 2,064.

"It's a beautiful feeling to be here and to be victorious," Becker said.

"I've had the privilege of serving the legislature since its inception," Muscarella said. "I became an elected official because I wanted to give something back to the community and I’m grateful to know that the community thinks I’m doing a great job. Hopefully I can continue to serve the community as long as they want it."

In a major upset, Republican incumbent John Ciotti lost to Democrat Carrie Solages in the 3rd L.D. The results were at least in part due to a YouTube video of a Ciotti campaign worker making racial comments while hanging signs for his candidate in front of the Solages campaign headquarters in Elmont.

“I would be naïve to say that the video didn’t play a role,” Solages said, “but I didn’t sign up for that, I signed up to run an effective campaign. We put our entire effort into the campaign,” he added. “We showed the public these career politicians aren’t here for us. We have a choice for something, a fresh perspective.”

With less than 50 percent of the election districts’ results posted on the county Board of Election website, Solages had 52 percent of the vote. Republicans conceded the 3rd L.D. race before midnight.

In other races, incumbent Democrat Robert Troiano beat Republican Karin Campbell in District 2, and incumbent Democrat Joseph Scannell beat Republican Christian Browne in District 5.

Three Republicans, Supervisor Kate Murray, Clerk Mark Bonilla and Receiver of Taxes Donald Clavin all won re-election by wide margins. As of late Tuesday night, Murray garnered 67 percent of the vote against her challenger, Gary Port, Bonilla earned 64 percent against Steve Anchin, and Clavin took 67 percent over Wilton Robinson.

In the contested town district races, incumbent Republican James Darcy of Valley Stream took 68 percent of the vote to defeat Owen Rumelt in the 3rd Council District, and incumbent Republican Edward Ambrosino of North Valley Stream defeated Patricia Locurcio with 64 percent of the vote in District 2.
