Approximately 380 elementary school students showcased the diverse skills they had acquired through the district’s Summer Enrichment Program during an open house held for family members at the conclusion of the three-week program.

The open house marked the 15th anniversary of the summer program, which provides students with an opportunity to learn a variety of new talents and skills outside of normal classroom learning through unique and innovative classes centered on academics, athletics and the arts.

“This program takes our curriculum a step further, ” said Covert Avenue School Assistant Principal Wellinthon Garcia, the summer program’s principal. “It also allows our students to think outside the box and to grow as learners.”

Included in the summer offerings were classes in puppetry, scrapbooking, yoga and an Introduction to Model United Nations class, which allowed students to conduct and present research on eradicating extreme poverty in different countries. Students also took part in theatrical performances as part of the Rising Stars and Shakespeare for Kids classes, created artwork in a 3-D art class, and had an opportunity to participate in a Lego course that incorporated the use of the building blocks into the study of mathematics and science.
