January Tree Pick-ups

The Sanitation Department announces curbside pick up of

discarded Christmas trees through Jan. 27. Please put trees at the curbside only on the designated day of the week for your neighborhood:

Tree of Life Yoga

Central Synagogue, 430 DeMott Ave. is again sponsoring a Winter "mini" session, with evening classes of yoga. The classes are open to yoga students of all levels. The Tree of Life Yoga will be offering a series of six classes each that began on Jan. 3 at 6 p.m. The series of classes is available for $75 or you may pay as you go for $15 a class. Members of the community are invited to participate. Village Art Club

The Village Art Club will have a drawing workshop with a clothed male model on Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. in the downstairs meeting room of the Rockville Centre Public Library, 221 North Village Ave. So bring your pencils and paper and enjoy an evening of drawing! RVC Community Fund's Enchanted Winterland

On Jan. 29 at 3 p.m. at Molloy College's new Madison Theatre, the Rockville Centre Guild for the Arts will feature the South Shore Symphony and Leggz Ltd. Dance in an interactive performance of Aaron Copland's "Billy the Kid" for the entire family. The performance will be followed by food and festivities in the school's new Public Square. Cerina and Richard McQuillan, the owners of Links Real Estate Group Ltd., will be honored. Proceeds to benefit the Rockville Centre Community Fund. Tickets are $40 for adults, $30 for seniors, and $20 for children 12 and under. No room for vengeance

Victoria Ruvolo, the victim of a thoughtless act of violence (the victim of a frozen turkey being tossed through her car windshield) will visit Molloy College on Jan. 31 at 5:30 p.m. to discuss the emotional and spiritual implications of her experience. Ruvolo wrote a book about her the horrific injuries she suffered in the assault that nearly killed her, her many months of rehab and meeting her attacker in a Long Island courtroom. "From My Hometown" — at Molloy's Madison Theatre

On Feb. 2 and 3 at 8 p.m.; Feb. 4 at 2 and 8 p.m. and on Feb. 5 at 3 p.m. the Madison Theatre at Molloy College presents "From My Hometown." Circa 1980, three soul singers pack their bags and leave their hometowns for the world-famous Apollo Theatre. Each seeks escape from poverty, leaving behind family and a hometown sweetheart. Enjoy classic R&B hits including “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay,” “Working in a Coal Mine,” “Lonely Teardrops,” “Try a Little Tenderness,” and many more. Cast members include Todrick Hall from American Idol” and Matthew Johnson from “X Factor.”

St. Agnes Cathedral School gala

The annual ball, with food and live music is set for Feb. 11, at the Garden City Hotel. The evening honors community members who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to Catholic education and recognizes an educator for outstanding service. Honorees include Hugh and Peggy Finnegan who will receive the St. Catherine of Siena Award for commitment to Catholic education; Gerald McTague who will receive the St. Thomas Aquinas Award for ongoing support of Catholic education and Catherine Fitzgerald, who will receive the Elizabeth Anne Seton Award for dedicated service to Catholic education.

NEED HOMEWORK HELP?

Homework Helpers, a partnership program between the Sandel Senior Center Service Corps and the Rockville Centre Public Library offers help with homework to students in grades 1-6 every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday between the hours of 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. in the Children’s Room of the Library. For further details, contact the Children’s Room.

The Library’s Career Center is now open Saturdays! Hours of Operation: Mondays 9 am-noon, Tuesdays 1-5 pm, Saturdays 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Lower Concourse Gallery

Island Scribes

The calligraphic works of the Long Island organization, "Island Scribes," will be on display in the Lower Concourse Gallery of the Rockville Centre Public Library during the month of January.

The word calligraphy means beautiful writing, and the Island Scribes are dedicated to the appreciation and promotion of the art of calligraphy. The exhibit will feature hand lettered works by members created in inks, paints, gold leaf and decorative papers. The many different hands used in calligraphy are used to enhance and interpret the meaning of the letters or words. One theme evident in the exhibit is Crazy Laws, the calligraphic interpretations of current laws on the books which have become obsolete or otherwise out-of-date.

Paintings by Charles LaPalme

Charles E. La Palme is a self-taught painter whose specialty is painting Long Island landscapes and wildlife. Prior to retirement, LaPalme taught Social Studies for 33 years in the Valley Stream school district. He became interested in painting when he taught an art history class at Valley Stream High School. Mr. LaPalme and his wife of 50 years reside on Long Island.

Connor and Friends

The fall/winter play group for children with special needs is scheduled from 2:30 - 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 29. Playtime is one hour, followed by light snacks and refreshments. Anyone interested can contact Marianne or Paul Lawless at mplawless@verizon.net.

Winter Program Recreation

The winter program season begins this week. Flyers are available at the Rec Center.

Birthday Parties and Rentals

The Rec Center offers age-appropriate birthday parties to Village residents for pre-school and elementary age children, seven days a week. All parties include an organized activity followed by refreshments and celebration time in the party room. Call (516) 678-9338 or 9339 for available dates and fee schedules.

Rooms at the John A. Anderson Recreation Center and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center are available for rental to groups and organizations. Equipment rentals are also available. For reservations, visit the Rec Center office or call (516) 678-9338 or 9339.

Open Gym Program

The main gymnasium of the Rec. Center will be open for free-play basketball for grades 4 and up on Saturday afternoons from 2-4:30 p.m. The evening open gym for grades 6 and up is open from 7:30 to 10:15 p.m. Valid Recreation Cards for 2011-2012 are required.

Gift Certificates

RVC Recreation Department gift certificates are available for gift giving.
