Food For Thought

An exhibit of still life masterpieces that illustrate how food has changed throughout time, in commemoration of Earth Month. Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at The Heckscher Museum
This juried exhibition, now in its 15th year, features approximately 80 works of art by students in grades 9 through 12 attending public and private schools throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Milton Avery & The End of Modernism
View works by the artist who brought the sketch to the status of a finished painting. The exhibit examines the contributions of Milton Avery as a significant figurative painter from the late 1920s through the early 1960s and places Avery’s work within a long history of modernist practice that recognizes the artist’s sketch as a finished work. 1930: Art in America
Drawing upon works from the Hofstra University Museum collection and loans from varied collections, this original exhibit provides a “snapshot” of the visual arts in America during the 1930s, in celebration of Hofstra’s 75th anniversary. Soweto Art: From The Collection Of Violet And Les Payne
An original exhibit that commemorates the 35th anniversary of the Soweto Uprising. Over 30 paintings and works on paper are on view from the collection of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Les Payne, who covered South Africa during that time period. Artists of Soweto represented include David Mbele, Velaphi Mzimba, Hargreaves Ntukwana, and Winston Saoli. Through April 21. Photo Competition
The Long Island Center of Photography is sponsoring its fifth annual photo competition. The competition is open to all photographers and includes all types of photography from traditional to new media. All photographers, amateur and professional, are invited to submit their most current work for consideration. Entries will be judged by R. Wayne Parsons, President of the Soho Photo Gallery in Manhattan and regular photography critic of the New York Photo Review. Winning photos will be exhibited at the African American Museum in Hempstead. Awards and prizes will be presented at an artist’s reception on Sept. 25.
