Re-elect Kevan Abrahams
Nassau County's 1st Legislative District has been well served by Democratic incumbent Kevan Abrahams, and the Herald encourages voters to re-elect him on Tuesday.
Despite repeated attempts by the Herald, his opponent, Republican Darren Bryant, could not be reached for an interview.
Abrahams, 33, has amassed a list of accomplishments since he was first elected in 2002. He has worked to obtain funding for programs and initiatives to help improve the lives of his constituents. He has proposed a local law that would prohibit registered sex offenders from living near schools, playgrounds and parks. He told the Herald Editorial Board that it would be one of the strictest sex offender laws in New York state.
A lifelong resident of Hempstead, Abrahams is passionate about improving the lines of communication between lawmakers and residents of Nassau County. "Bringing Mineola to the 1st Legislative District" is his motto, and Abrahams has helped organize many community meetings in his district that have addressed issues ranging from understanding property taxes to gang prevention. He also started a Door-to-Door campaign, visiting homes in his district to speak to residents about the different levels of government.
In January 2006, Abrahams helped fund the completion of a road improvement and beautification project on Grand Avenue in Baldwin. That same month, he helped to create the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Peace Park in Uniondale, which was part of his Community Revitalization initiative.
If he is re-elected, Abrahams said, he wants to extend his beautification efforts to other areas of the district, such as South Hempstead and Roosevelt. He also plans to create more after-school activities for young people to help combat gang violence.
Abrahams has extensive experience in government, having served as a district representative for U.S. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, a deputy district director for former Rep. Floyd H. Flake, and Nassau County's deputy finance director. He is currently the chairman of the Legislature's Public Works Committee and the vice chairman of the Finance and Minority Affairs committees.
Abrahams has the Herald's vote of confidence. He is an informed leader who has the ambition, resources and experience that will continue to benefit his 1st District constituents.
