Five people were injured, one seriously, in a house fire in the early morning of July 17 at 98 Woods Ave.

According to a police report, two people in the house were able to escape on their own, but battling heavy smoke conditions when they responded to the scene at 5:05 a.m., firefighters had to rescue three others — a 13-year-old girl, a 9-year-old boy and a 59-year-old woman. The girl was rescued from a second floor landing; the boy was rescued after firefighters, unable to get into the home through the front door, placed a ladder on the second floor and pushed an air conditioner into the room where he was found. The woman was pulled by firefighters from another bedroom on the second floor and taken to a local hospital where she was admitted for treatment of her injuries. The other four victims were treated and released.

Rockville Centre firefighters were joined by fire personnel from four other departments to fight the blaze, which is thought to have started in the home’s living room. More than 60 firefighters and numerous pieces of apparatus were at the scene. The fire is under investigation.
