National Nurses Week was commemorated by the Five Towns Premier Rehabilitation & Nursing Home in Woodmere with a sweet and siren-aided outdoor celebration on May 7, for all the work by health care workers and first responders during the coronavirus pandemic.

Hewlett and Woodmere firefighters, emergency medical technicians and ambulances from Hatzalah, Emergency Service and RCA Ambulance Service parked outside the facility on Central Avenue, applauded all the health care employees and sounded the vehicle’s sirens. Nassau County police were also in attendance.

Hewlett-Woodmere Business Association President David Friedman served as emcee and Premier Administrator Joe Benden added words of appreciation. “We applaud all the work that first responders do,” he said. “Thank you so much.”

A party-like atmosphere enveloped the front entrance with a huge balloon archway, people holding signs reading Thank you and festive music playing such as Prince’s “1999” and Katrina and the Waves’ “Walking on Sunshine.”

Girl Scout Troop 737 leader Laura Fratti strummed the guitar and led the crowd in “America the Beautiful” and “God Bless America.” Batman, aka Lawrence resident Josh Aryeh, was there with his custom Batmobile but sporting the Robin costume of the Caped Crusader’s sidekick.
